The Durer Metal Plate is the only known Plaque made of metal that has an original composition by Albrecht Durer. What’s so fascinating about this plate is that it gives diverse appearances depending on the angle of light and shadow. It illuminates and radiates when light strikes the plates composition. My research, has led me on a journey that has taken well over five years of intense research and investigation. My research has produced documents, photographs and pictures. This documentation helps to substantiate my “hypothesis.”

A couple of the engraved metal plates may still exist.  They were used to produce the “multiple paper impressions” Durer used for retailing during fairs, travels, etc. This enigma was used to immortalize an important event or idea; the discovery of  metal plates by Durer is a rare find. Most of his engraved plates were “melted down after the plate wore out.” Keep in mind these plates were used to produce “multiple copies.”

As you continue to pursue knowledge and other information concerning this master artist, remember that he started his apprenticeship under his father who was a master goldsmith. Under his father’s guidance, Durer learnt the skill of working with all types of metal such as iron, silver and copper, just to name a few. The fascinating thing about this plate is that it is etched with one of his most famous compositions titled; “The Knight, Death & Devil.”

This etched metal plate seems to fit the time period that Durer experimented with the “etching technique” during 1512-1516. Although, I believe he used etching much earlier to incise patterns into goblets, armor, utensils, etc. During these years, he made three plates that are considered by most art experts and historians to be “Master Engraved Plates.”

I believe that Albrecht Durer made this composition into two orientations:
1. The first - to memorialize the original thought
2. The second - to produce multiple copies for distribution
