The Knight, Death and Devil

The Knight, Death and the Devil is the name of the first of three original compositions completed by the artist, Albrecht Durer during the years 1513-1514. Simply called the “Reuter” which means the “rider.” This historic and religious allegory is full of meanings that transcend from the symbolism and cipher. In order to gain a full understanding we must investigate and research Durer, his life & times and earlier historical & religious events along with a thorough examination of the plate’s composition.

This allegory of Christian Faith, dated 1513, shows a Knight on horseback who seems undeterred by the fact that the Devil is touching “The Armor of God.”  Death approaches on an angle to cross his path while wearing a crown of serpents and holding an hour-glass with clock in hand. Although, he (The Knight) displays that his time has almost passed, he is unshaken and remains posed. His faithful and loyal dog runs alongside him and prevents the Devil from taking a hold or grasp. Dogs where believed to see through darkness, and are seen on tombstones etc.

The Knight continues to travel down a path passing a Salamander; they were thought to be impervious to fire and flames. At the end of the road there is a skull seated on a tree trunk and in the foreground, beyond the mountains and withered trees is “Jerusalem.”

Knight, Death and the Devil happens to be the original metal plate that I discovered over five years ago. I have been involved in extensive research and investigations that has led to enough documentation, which substantiates my opinion. This evidence that I have uncovered, will help prove that Durer and only Durer could have created this master plate.

The Durer Hypothesis Volume 1 documents my search for thorough documented, journals that verify the research, investigations and the results from the journals. The Knight, Death and the Devil will be brought to light once you read this non-fiction account. You will find the truth, not misinformation and unsubstantiated facts. This original composition, Durer would have protected.  In order to preserve his idea, he would of had to make a monument. This monument, Durer made out of plate metal using the same technique taught by his father whom trained and apprenticed him to be a goldsmith. Through doing this, Durer protected his original idea and paid homage to his lineage.

The Knight, Death and the Devil is world renowned and one of the greatest compositions ever devised, not only for its surface meaning but also for the iconography used in the execution. Once you begin to launch your own investigation, you will open your mind to impossible possibilities. This will give you the ability to start to conceptualize what I have known for years; that the metal plate in which I discovered with the etched composition of The Knight, Death and the Devil is authentic.

QUOTES:

  1. Yet all his young energy returned to him once again in his 40's when he became the first great artist to experiment with the new medium of etching. He etched only six plates, probably the acid bit the iron too raggedly to suit his demand for exact detail.
  2. Germany and Switzerland did not begin using paper until about 100 years after France. In the mid-14th century diplomas in Germany began to be written on paper, which thus gained acceptance for official purposes. The Germans, however, found it an excessively perishable material, and it was not until 1549 that the Council of Augsburg sanctioned the use of paper for documents previously written on parchment.
  3. The list of Durer’s works complied by scholars include many more works than we have been able to discuss here. We have merely shaken the golden bough of Durer’s art and gathered up the ripest fruits. But if we search among the branches, we shall still come across many that have remained hidden.
